Hey everyone,
The idea of this thread is to post the strangest, and possibly scariest real news items you can find. Maybe you can find a company that seems to be doing some really strange research.
An example would be:

Lethal secrets of 1918 flu virus
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6271833.stm
Scientists who recreated "Spanish flu" - the 1918 virus which killed up to 50m people - have witnessed its remarkable killing power first hand. The lungs of infected monkeys were destroyed in just days as their immune systems went into overdrive after a Canadian laboratory rebuilt the virus. The reason for the lethal nature of the 1918 flu was never fully understood.
Note: The Spanish flu virus that swept the world in 1918-19 is considered one of the most deadly diseases in history. The influenza went on to kill 40 million in a matter of months.

The world stands at the brink of a second nuclear age. The United States and Russia remain ready to stage a nuclear attack within minutes, North Korea conducts a nuclear test, and many in the international community worry that Iran plans to acquire the Bomb. Climate change also presents a dire challenge to humanity. Damage to ecosystems is already taking place; flooding, destructive storms, increased drought, and polar ice melt are causing loss of life and property.

also
Robot Armies Planed? (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/02/18/robogrunt_the_us_militarys_plans/)
Reasons why...
1> When war becomes a video game who feels the pain of defeat and the death toll? Most people in war that have had to kill another person have said that they have nightmares about it, Computers don't have nightmares.
2> With the advent and massive growth of WiFi connections, It wont be long until there is wireless access to all corners of the earth.
3> Perhaps our friends in the military should watch the Terminator film series. lol

Scientists Pretty Sure Experiment Won't Destroy Planet
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/topic/story.cfm?c_id=325&objectid=10400645
If the theories are correct, the machine will create tiny black holes that evaporate and possibly even find particles that offer evidence that the three dimensions known to mankind are just a fraction of those that exist.
[...]
Dr Cox dismissed worries that by adventuring into the unknown and creating tiny black holes, the machine could even destroy the planet. "The probability is at the level of 10 to the minus 40," he said.

Cambodian Troops Quarantine Quan'sul
Military Forces quarantine Quan'sul
There has been a small outbreak of “zombism” in a small town near the border of Laos in North-Eastern Cambodia.
The culprit was discovered to be mosquitoes native to that region carrying a new strain of Malaria which thus far has a 100 percent mortality rate and kills victims in fewer than 2 days.
After death, this parasite is able to restart the heart of its victim for up to two hours after the initial demise of the person where the individual behaves in extremely violent ways from what is believed to be a combination of brain damage and a chemical released into blood during “resurrection.”
Cambodian officials say that the outbreak has been contained and the public has no need to worry.
General Ary Serey had this to say, "We have obtained samples of this new parasite and plan to learn how it starts the heart and other major organs of the deceased. We intend to use this to increase the quality of life for all."
US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice opposed the plan saying that the Cambodian government holds a great biological weapon and should destroy it immediately. Cambodian officials have yet to comment.
A United Nations team will be dispatched to Cambodia to confirm the safety of biological research in Cambodia.

Success: Lab-grown teeth successfully transplanted to mice
By Alex Zaharov-Reutt

A breakthrough by Japanese researchers in growing teeth in a lab dish and successfully transplanting them into mice points way to an organ regeneration future and better ways to restore health and grant longer lives to humans.

Some of you may have seen a show on CBS called Jericho, which centers around the tribulations of a small town in a post-nuclear United States. One of the major story arcs concerns a fictional government-mandated private security contractor, which is just a fancy way of saying "mercenaries," called Ravenwood. Not surprisingly, Ravenwood is involved in all kinds of shady practices, not the least of which are murder-for-hire and the 'appropriation' of goods and services under the banner of the U.S. government.
A number of people who have seen the show have commented to me that the U.S. would never hire Mercs to conduct military operations. These same people are shocked when i tell them that this is common practice and will become more common in the future as the U.S. capitalistic agenda infiltrates other governments. The producer and/or creator of Jericho is making a veiled gibe at the largest of the Merc Corp.'s in the U.S., which is called Blackwater. You can see the obvious similarity in the names. Read a little about Blackwater's dubious involvement with the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts here:

This is the latest sinister "crowd control" device that the US military has developed.
http://blog.wired.com/defense/2007/02/new_roboweapon_.html
Its a freaking 7.5 million candlelight power beam that can paralyze people, and to make things even more horrifying they're thinking of combining it with the other crowd control device they recently unveiled, the one that makes people feel as if they're on fire.
I don't know, but something about this latest trend just doesn't sit well, seems to me this might be the teargas of the future, the new way to deal with crowds of unruly people protesting the government or a corporation, scary nonetheless.

Several houses and at least one lorry have been swallowed by a giant sinkhole in a poor district of Guatemala City.
Neighbors said the ground had been shaking for weeks after a huge sewer pipe burst, making the ground underneath the houses unstable. Foul stench, weird noises and horrifying vibrations came from the hole after the cave-in friday night.
Officials said the sinkhole had probably been caused by a saturated sewer main. [But we all know that there were C.H.O.T.A dogs trying to dig their way into a Gasoline station]

Combat robots!
Army tests fighting bot
The U.S. Army will test a six-wheeled, 20-foot robot to see whether it can traverse rugged terrain, fire machine guns and carry 1,900 pounds of gear without soldiers remotely controlling its every move. The two-and-a-half ton Multifunction Utility Logistics and Equipment (MULE) vehicle is seen as the robot that will travel with every light infantry company in the Army. Designed to fly on a Black Hawk, the MULE will carry two 7.62mm machine guns and two Javelin anti-tank missiles and feed camera data from its on-board sensors. The MULE is supposed to drive and navigate on its own using an Autonomous Navigation System (ANS) whose algorithms can direct its own course. (Wired www.wired.com - 05/01/07)

Martian Cave Dwellings
Seven football field--size caves may have been discovered on Mars. Analysis of photographs from NASAs Mars Odyssey orbiter revealed black spots near the massive Martian volcano Arsia Mons that do not look like impact craters because they lack blast patterns and raised rims. Scientists at Northern Arizona University and their colleagues say the possible caverns range from 330 to 825 feet wide and are 425 feet deep

Did you read the whole article or just the last part? Yes he depicted Japan as a stereotype while depiciting Germany as Hitler, but since that was the style then, and he may have had very little information to go on, as well as I doubt he would have gotten published if he made them look like gods, AND the fact that he blasted anti-black and anti-Semitic prejudice in the his books, I don't think that is fair. Unless you want to say he was an alchoholic since he was also against Prohibition.....
And since I have already gone way off-topic, to Onassis, that isn't unusual. Lots of rich people leave the kids only enough for college. The dog needs taking care of (not sure it needed that much but hey) the grandkids can get a job. Often the perception is they can earn it the way I did....so grandma is telling them to sleep their way to the top ;)

Air Force Says Nukes Flown Out of Minot Base (oops...)
Three Air Force officers quoted in the Airforce Times say a B-52 bomber mistakenly loaded with five nuclear warheads flew from Minot Air Force Base to Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, last week. Officers, who spoke under condition of anonymity, say the incident took place on August 30 and has resulted in an Air Force-wide investigation.
The Times reports the B-52 was loaded with Advanced Cruise Missiles, part of a Defense Department effort to decommission 400 of the ACMs. But the nuclear warheads should have been removed at Minot before being transported to Barksdale, the officers said.
Air Force spokesman Lt. Col. Ed Thomas said the transfer was safely conducted and the weapons were in Air Force custody and control at all times. However, the mistake was not discovered until the B-52 landed at Barskdale, which left the warheads unaccounted for during the approximately 3 1/2 hour flight between the two bases. boom !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION
SNELLVILLE, Ga. — Police are investigating the death of a man who collapsed after being headbutted by an armless man in a fight over a woman.
Snellville Police Chief Roy Whitehead said the two men, Charles Keith Teer and William Russell Redfren, scuffled Monday afternoon in the driveway of a suburban Atlanta home.
Witnesses told authorities that Redfren, who has no arms, kicked Teer, and Teer struck Redfren, Whitehead said.
After bystanders separated them, Redfren "came back and headbutted [Teer] one time," Whitehead said.
Teer complained of feeling dizzy, collapsed, and died, Whitehead said.
Police are awaiting autopsy results before deciding whether Redfren should be charged

A female artillery officer risked her life on Friday in a desperate bid to prevent members of her battery dying from their own anti-aircraft gun.
But the brave, as yet unnamed officer was unable to stop the wildly swinging computerised Swiss/German Oerlikon 35mm MK5 anti-aircraft twin-barrelled gun. It sprayed hundreds of high-explosive 0,5kg 35mm cannon shells around the five-gun firing position.
By the time the gun had emptied its twin 250-round auto-loader magazines, nine soldiers were dead and 11 injured.
