Especially in MMOs and/or roleplay. It seems to be a big myth for some people but most of us will have known gamer girls who play consoles with the guys, it's not that huge a difference really to then know girls who play PC games. Not in this day and age.
(and before any smart arse says it, no not including the ones that pretend)
If anything there's probably more than people know about cos they're avoiding the hassle of being known as females, the amount of people who still 'ZOMG A GIRL' and then try and buy them a load of stuff and be their best friend :p Yeh, it's hard being a girl!
Male, for the record.

There's nothing wrong with a guy having a girl toon tho.
To say otherwise would be to say there is no legitmacy for playable female characters existing in any game, singleplayer or mutliplayer.
We're talking about the actual gender of the gamer here, and it was already stated that nobody meant guys who pretend to be girls behind the toon aswell.

Ah yes, that really anoys me when people find out that a certain toon was created by the oppersite sex and then go around shouting all sorts of remarks and insults.
Some people fail to see that the person behind the toon happened to created him/her for other reasons, maybe for role playing or something else.
Just some immature people out there have a fixed perception about this.

When in RP, I couldn't give a flying fu** about who's behind the character, as long as they are darn good at RP'ing. :p
Altho, that does not count for my cousin and my neighbour, as those guys creep me out when they play female characters... At least, they do dabble in RP'ing, and it lessens the creepyness..sometimes.
In another MMORPG, My character ended up marrying a character controlled by a guy... We had alot of laughs, but "she" did tend to go to the "extremes" when it came to RP'ing a woman. PMS? My character are not ever going near any female character ever again that has PMS!

If the guy isn't claiming to be a girl then why on earth would anyone have a problem with it.... it's a character.
Think of shakespeare and plays

to say you can't play a female, even if its just that you create a female toon and not even rping one ic or ooc, what's the problem.
Are you sure it's not cos you might like the look of the toon and it creeps you out to think it's a guy 'behind' it.

No it's not that, thats all fine a male creating the characters its their job to, that fine, i s'pose i dont mind really, it was just a shock to my system when erm this guy i know well not just any guy, my boyfriend to be exact creates a new char and its a girl, its just something i'd rather not think about. i really was put off by it knowing behind that char was my bf and he was playing a girl.

It means he's comfortable in his sexuality to not have to be all macho about never playing a girl, cos he's a guy and those pixels are girls pixels, and he's a MANNNN. :D
I could understand people thinking it 'peculier' if a guy were RPing a girl. (I personally have no problem with this myself but can understand why some would). But definately if they're an OOCer , its no big deal. Just a toon, just pixels.... Sexy little pixels. Tee hee.

I'm male... my name is actually a variance of my German ancestry influenced last name.
And I actually know more female online game players than males by two.
Of course, I live in the Silicon Valley, so that might have something to do with it...
But anyways, there's my contribution to the gender poll.

Even my wife would rather I stare at a female rear end for hours playing a game than a male's. So she doesn't object when I switch it around.
And I used to make insane tips in early SWG as a female Twi'Lek Dancer.

Something to chew on, for those that think women don't play games:
From ESA (http://www.theesa.com/index.php) webpage:
"Thirty-eight percent of all game players are women. In fact, women over the age of 18 represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (30%) than boys age 17 or younger (23%)."
Wow, I guess making games that only appeal to the male libido and the male "epeen" sure is a winner in the game market eh? ruling out 38% of the gamers? :p
"Adult gamers have been playing an average of 12 years. Among most frequent gamers, adult males average 10 years for game playing, females for 8 years."
8 years of playing? I bet many of the youngsters on this forum can't even remember what they did 8 years ago...and yet, the girls were gaming with the "elite" even back then :p
"Fifty-eight of online game players are male."
"Forty-two percent of online game players are female."
Uh oh, it gets even worse for online games! Now making "epeen" games will rule out 42% of the online gamers! :p
In fact, these numbers from the software industry, makes me wonder why the developers of games try to make kiddy games and "epeen" games. :p
Apperently I don't look like a male. :o

Sausage fest much? I'm not sure FE is exactly the game to appeal to the majority of women, then again female gamers always to tend to surprise. Generally much more preferable as backup over males I've found though, less alpha male and epeen crap.

That might have been true about 10 years ago, but today that is pretty low. Especially when you consider games like City of Heroes and WoW to have "girl", and I use that term loosely ;), populations of around 30% to 40%... apparently.
However, 10 to 1 is pretty spot on for the "horney guy wanting to dip his wick" to girl ratio here in real life Queensland, Gold Coast. Its like for every girl I see, there are a pack of 10 hormone charged Neanderthals following her, grunting, yelling and yahooing for her attention.

It's the root of all male disputes, who has the larger penis. Only in this case in online games it's about who has the larger e-penis or epeen. Mostly just categorized by how "leet" you are at kicking other players asses.

Hopefully FE will appeal to female gamers. During my time with SWG the female gamers I knew contributed at lot to the community.

I play a mix... If I'm rping, I'll more than likly play a male though, cus I don't think I could RP a women, and do it justice scared I'd come off as some guys idea of what a women is chick cliche ><
As to what gender you play ingame, hey what ever floats your boat. Just don't get offened when they are not what expect.
Unless of course they deliberatly misslead you into whats behind the screen. (That just sucks)
Though I have found playing a female toon on an MMO (as aposed to MMORPG) can be tiresome.
I've had men try and chat me up because my toon is female, and I'm like, dude, I'm a bloke... then they go rant at me for decieving them
Ah well.

I would sure like to hear what the devs ideas are about attracting female gamers in the long run. Maybe it's just not a priority here due to the setting and nature of the game. But I really believe that an MMORPG would have a much better chance in today's crowded market if it could draw in female customers new to the mmo world. Easier said than done though obviously.

Woman in Online Games actually get treated better then the men do. Some guys will even inpersonate being a woman just because they get treated better in games. To the poster above who said women get treated better than men in online games ... well, not really. It's true that female avatars get favourable treatment in some games, but if people figure out that you really are a woman playing a female character you can get hastled into hiding in some games. I hope the level of this game will be such that it's somewhere that I can be myself, without taking the ugly dwarf option either.

I just like helping people in-game, and try to help everyone I can. Doesn't matter whether or not their avatar persona or real-life is female in sex. People have called me out for 'liking' that persona and that's why I helped them, but I'm just as willing to help them if they're polite. That is, if I can help them and they aren't eons above me in level.
Golden rule doesn't work in practice, but I work by example.

Not a contradiction, simply 2 different women. As Adam and Lilith were created at the same time Adam watched as she was built from the inside out and was so disgusted that he couldn't bear to look at her. So God had to put him to sleep and remove a rib and created Eve while he was out...or something like that...
